§ 24-6. Installation of tracer wire in all underground utilities.
(a)
Purpose. The purpose of this section is that more, and practically all utilities are being installed underground, and creating a locating problem for all who have to install or later repair these utilities.
(b)
Requirements of tracer wire to be installed. The owner of the property or the contractor for the owner would be responsible for placing the tracer wire on the customer's side of meters and their own property. The wire would be installed with all utilities that could not be traced and would be installed on the city side of meters and taps by the city. All underground utilities that cannot be traced by mechanical tracing equipment shall have the tracer wire placed above and within twelve (12) of the pipe to be located. The wire should be connected to the wire or pipe supplied by the utility company to make a continuous locatable pipe to the house or structure.
(c)
Inspections. Before any pipeline or conduit is covered with fill material, it shall be inspected by the city for compliance of this section.
(d)
Tracer wire defined. "Tracer wire" shall mean a locatable wire of No. 14 gauge or larger wire (smaller gauge number) and shall be copper or coated copper to prevent rapid deterioration in contact with soils.
